About us

David Lloyd Funerals is a funeral business offering services to Novocastrian families in the Newcastle and Central Coast regions in NSW since 1885.

Our history

In 1885, David Lloyd, a cabinet maker, insurance agent and Mayor of Merewether, started David Lloyd Funerals and was soon joined by his son, David Lewis Lloyd, who became the second generation of Lloyd funeral directors.

David Lewis Lloyd moved David Lloyd Funerals to Adamstown after WWI as well as opening a second funeral home and chapel at Mayfield.

David became Mayor of Adamstown and an Alderman of the Greater Newcastle Council.

Through his service to the area and family connections through his wife, Vera Lloyd (nee Kilgour), David Lloyd Funerals provided funeral services to many of the Newcastle's dignitaries including Mayors, Aldermen and others.

The Next Generation of David Lloyd Funerals

Douglas Kilgour Lloyd, the son of David Lewis Lloyd and grandson to the original David Lloyd, also joined the family business. Douglas saw active service during WWII in the RAAF. Following the war, Douglas took over the running of David Lloyd Funerals after his father and brother passed away.

Under Douglas's direction, David Lloyd Funerals expanded throughout the Newcastle area and began providing funeral services to new communities groups, including the region's Jewish, Greek, Serbian and Italian communities.

In 1999 David Lloyd Funerals joined Australia's largest network of funeral homes – Guardian Funerals – ensuring that the good name of David Lloyd Funerals and its reputation for professional care will be available for the people of Newcastle, the Central Coast and surrounding areas for many years to come.
